Why This Celebration Matters to All of Us πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ

By Laura Lui June 16, 2025

Every June 19th, communities across the United States gather in parks, neighborhoods, and city centers for a vibrant celebration filled with music, dancing, food, history, and joy. It’s called Juneteenth—and it’s not just a Black holiday, it’s an American one.

But what exactly is Juneteenth, and why should we all care?

🌟 What is Juneteenth?

Juneteenth (short for June Nineteenth) marks the day in 1865 when enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas were finally informed of their freedom—two and a half years after President Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation.

Imagine the joy, the relief, and the disbelief. That moment was not just a victory for the people of Galveston—it was a symbol of delayed justice finally catching up, and the resilience of those who had endured so much.

It became a tradition, passed through generations, and in 2021, Juneteenth was recognized as a federal holiday.

πŸ–€ Why Juneteenth Matters—To Everyone

1. It celebrates freedom.
Freedom is a core American value. Juneteenth reminds us that freedom didn’t come all at once for everyone—and that true liberty is something we must continuously protect and expand for all people.

2. It honors resilience.
The African American story is one of incredible endurance, creativity, and strength. Juneteenth shines a light on the power of community, family, and hope in the face of centuries of hardship.

3. It’s a call to remember—and to grow.
Juneteenth helps us reflect on our history—not to dwell in guilt or shame, but to learn from it, to teach our kids better, and to build a more just and compassionate future together.

4. It’s full of joy!
At its heart, Juneteenth is a party. It’s BBQs, parades, poetry slams, gospel choirs, storytelling, and soul food. It’s a celebration of culture and creativity, and everyone’s invited.
